Nepali tea is a lesser heard tea industry than it’s global counterparts. Some of the world’s exquisite teas are grown in the lush, mountainous regions of eastern Nepal, and its distinct flavors come from high altitudes and the dedication of small-scale tea artisans. From robust black teas to delicate white & earthy green teas, Nepali teas are crafted with care, offering a taste thats both unique and deeply rooted in tradition.
Why Do Nepali Tea Artisans Need Our Support?
For over 50 years, the Nepali tea industry has struggled against steep odds. Despite producing world-class teas, many artisans face persistent challanges that remain unresolved:
- Lack of Fair Markets: Over 95% of Nepali tea is exported to India, where teas are often sold cheaply through brokers. Artisans earn just a fraction of what their teas are worth.
- High Certification Costs: Organic certification can cost upto $10,000—a hefty price that small-scale producers can’t afford. Many artisans lose their certification simply because they can't cover renewal fees.
- Labour Shortages: Political instablity and economic hardships have driven many young people abroad. Tea farming demands intensive manual labor, and is becoming less sustainable for aging farmers.
- Limited Branding & Marketing: India has a government-backed Darjeeling brand, but Nepal’s tea producers lack a unified, protected brand identity, leaving many small farms invisible in the global market.
- Technological Gaps: Many producers still rely on traditional, labor-intensive methods due to limited access to modern tools and training.
Our Initiative and How We Think It Can Help
At Nepal Hills Tea, we knew we couldn't change the entire industry overnight, but we could start somewhere. We also know that cheap marketing gimmicks like elevating hundreds of thousands of farmers from poverty is not achievable. Thats why we came up with a realistic goal. We are committed to donating 5% of our revenue toward helping small farms achieve or renew organic certification. This isn’t actually a charity: it is an investment in a sustainable future of Nepali tea community/industry.
We faithfully believe that every dollar that we provide back to the farms can support on training sessions, certification fees, and technological upgrades. Our goal is to help atleast one factory each year secure organic certification. We carefully choose those with the most significant societal impact and the passion to drive organic awareness.
Nepal Hills Tea was born from a deep connection to our roots. Our founder grew up amid the tea gardens of eastern Nepal, watching their family dedicate themselves to the craft despite countless challanges. After witnessing small farmers struggle year after year, it became clear that change was needed. Combining passion with purpose, Nepal Hills Tea was founded to showcase Nepali tea to the world while ensuring the artisans behind every leaf are fairly rewarded.
