Green Tea Benefits: What Science Says About This Ancient Drink

par Bhaskar Dahal 09 May 2026

Last updated: June 2026

Green tea is one of the most studied beverages on earth — and for good reason. Modern science has been trying to understand why populations who drink it regularly seem to live longer, have healthier hearts, and maintain sharper minds. The short answer: there is something genuinely powerful in the cup.

This article covers the science honestly, explains what the evidence actually shows, and tells you why high-altitude Nepali green tea from Ilam may be worth your attention specifically.

What Makes Green Tea Different

All tea comes from Camellia sinensis. What separates green tea from black or oolong is processing: green tea leaves are heated shortly after harvest to stop oxidation. This preserves their natural compounds nearly intact: catechins (especially EGCG), L-theanine, caffeine (~25–40mg per cup), and chlorophyll, vitamins, and minerals.

1. Powerful Antioxidant Protection

EGCG is one of the most potent antioxidants found in food. A cup of quality green tea can contain 50–100mg of EGCG. Regular green tea drinkers show higher antioxidant activity in their blood and reduced markers of oxidative damage.

2. Heart Health

A 2022 meta-analysis of 35 studies found that 3–5 cups of green tea daily was associated with significantly lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Specific benefits: reduced LDL cholesterol oxidation, modest blood pressure reduction, and improved endothelial function.

3. Calm Focus — The L-Theanine Effect

L-theanine promotes alpha brain waves — the relaxed-focus state associated with meditation. Combined with caffeine, research shows it improves sustained attention, working memory, and reaction time without the anxious edge or crash that often follow coffee.

4. Weight Management

EGCG and caffeine together modestly increase thermogenesis. A review of 11 randomised controlled trials found green tea catechins combined with caffeine led to small but statistically significant reductions in body weight compared to placebo.

5. Blood Sugar Regulation

A meta-analysis of 17 trials found green tea consumption significantly reduced fasting blood glucose and HbA1c. The effect was most pronounced in people already at metabolic risk.

6. Oral Health

Catechins in green tea inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans, the primary bacteria responsible for tooth decay. Population studies in Japan show lower rates of cavities among regular green tea drinkers.

7. Anti-Inflammatory Effects

EGCG inhibits several inflammatory signalling pathways. Regular green tea consumption is associated with lower circulating levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a key inflammatory marker.

Why Ilam Green Tea May Be More Potent

Nepal Hills sources green teas from gardens in Ilam, Nepal at 5,000–7,000 ft elevation. Higher UV intensity causes the plant to produce more catechins. Cooler temperatures slow leaf growth, concentrating L-theanine. Hand-picking and small-batch processing preserves quality. Both green teas are grown on certified organic farmland (Farmers Tea Co, Ilam).

Nepal Hills Green Teas

  • Floral Green Tea — jasmine-adjacent florals, fresh sweetness, clean finish. From CAD $10.
  • Organic Light Green Tea — smooth, light, low caffeine. Grown on certified organic farmland (Farmers Tea Co, Ilam 5,500 ft). From CAD $20.
  • Tea Sampler Kit — includes green teas alongside all four types. Best entry point. CAD $30.

How to Brew Nepal Hills Green Tea

Temperature: 75–85°C. Amount: 1 tsp per 250ml. Steep time: 2–3 minutes. Multiple steeps: yes. Never use boiling water on green tea. If your green tea tastes bitter, water temperature is almost certainly the cause.
