Switching from Coffee to Tea? Here's Where to Start

par Bhaskar Dahal 09 May 2026 0 commentaire

You like coffee, and you want to drink less of it. Maybe you've cut back before and kept going back to it because nothing else did the job. Tea seems the obvious alternative, but the teas you've tried tasted weak, flat, or just wrong.

Most people who "don't like tea" have only tried the wrong teas. The teas that work for coffee drinkers are fairly specific, and once you find one, switching gets much easier.

This guide covers which teas to try, why they suit coffee drinkers, and why our teas from Ilam and Taplejung (grown at 5,000 to 7,000 ft in Nepal) fit this switch so well.

What Coffee Drinkers Need from Tea

Coffee drinkers want more than caffeine. They want:

  • Body: a full, satisfying mouthfeel instead of a thin, watery cup
  • Depth: enough flavour and complexity to feel like part of a morning ritual
  • A real lift: enough caffeine to notice
  • No bitterness: coffee drinkers who take milk or sugar in their coffee often dislike bitter tea even more

Most commercial teas fall short on all four. They're blended for consistency on supermarket shelves, with little thought for strength or character. High-altitude, single-origin teas from Nepal are bold enough to satisfy, sweet enough to drink without sugar, and complex enough to enjoy.

The Best Teas for Coffee Drinkers

1. Ruby Black Tea: The Closest Thing to Coffee

If you want coffee's body and boldness without the acidity or jitters, start with Ruby Black Tea. It tastes of dark cherry and cocoa and is full-bodied, smooth, and very satisfying. It brews dark, smells strong, and holds up well with milk if that's how you take it.

Grown at 5,000 to 7,000 ft in Ilam, the slow-growing leaves develop more complex flavour than lowland teas, without the tannic bitterness of cheap black tea. From CAD $10 for 25g.

2. Gold Black Tea: The Smooth Everyday Cup

Gold Black Tea comes from a certified organic estate in Ilam and is carefully processed. It's smooth and full-bodied, with malt, caramel, and gentle honey notes, and coffee drinkers regularly tell us it "tastes like a proper morning tea." It has no astringency or bitterness and works well with or without milk. CAD $20 for 50g.

3. Muscatel Black Tea: For Something Surprising

If you drink single-origin or specialty coffee and care about complex flavour, you'll like Muscatel Black Tea from Norling Specialty Tea in Ilam. Its honey-grape muscatel character is unlike anything else, and it matches the complexity of a Darjeeling second flush for a fraction of the price. It's delicate enough to drink without milk and complex enough to reward your attention. From CAD $10.

4. Dark Oolong: Less Caffeine, Plenty of Character

If you want to cut caffeine but keep the ritual of a complex, satisfying hot drink, Dark Oolong makes a good bridge. It's 50% oxidised, bolder than green tea and softer than black, with stone fruit (peach, plum) and roasted honey notes. It has less caffeine than black tea and more depth than any green tea, and it works hot or cold-brewed. From CAD $10.

How Tea Compares to Coffee for Caffeine

Drink Caffeine per 250ml cup L-Theanine
Espresso (double shot) 120 to 160mg None
Drip coffee 80 to 120mg None
Nepal Hills Black Tea 40 to 70mg Yes, smooths the effect
Nepal Hills Dark Oolong 30 to 50mg Yes, higher concentration
Nepal Hills Green Tea 25 to 40mg Yes, highest concentration
Nepal Hills White Tea 15 to 30mg Yes, most calming

The big difference is L-theanine, an amino acid in tea that promotes alpha brain waves, the relaxed-focus state linked to calm attention. L-theanine doesn't block caffeine; it smooths it out. You get steadier, longer-lasting energy without the cortisol spike and crash that coffee causes in many people.

Most coffee drinkers who switch to black tea say they feel more focused and less anxious than on coffee, even though they're taking in less caffeine overall.

How to Switch Without Suffering

Don't Quit Caffeine Cold Turkey

If you drink 2 to 3 coffees a day and switch straight to a single cup of green tea, you'll have a caffeine headache by 11am. Instead:

  • Week 1: Replace one coffee with a strong black tea (Ruby Black or Gold Black) and keep the rest.
  • Week 2: Replace two coffees with black tea.
  • Week 3: Move to oolong or green tea for afternoon cups, and keep black tea for the morning.
  • Week 4+: You'll probably find you want coffee less.

Brew It Strong and Hot

If you're a coffee drinker who made weak, pale tea and was disappointed, the brewing was the problem. Use 1.5 teaspoons per 250ml and water at 90 to 95°C (let boiled water sit for 30 seconds), and steep for 3 to 4 minutes. That gives you a properly full cup. For something stronger still, use 2 teaspoons and steep for 4 minutes.

Keep Your Coffee Habits

If you take milk in your coffee, put it in your black tea too. If you drink coffee black, try your black tea black first. The ritual matters as much as the drink, and keeping it familiar makes the change easier.

Cold Brew for Summer

Cold-brewed black tea is excellent and naturally sweet. Add 3 to 4g of Ruby Black or Gold Black to 500ml of cold filtered water, leave it in the fridge overnight, and serve over ice. It has more body and complexity than iced coffee concentrate, with no need for milk.

The Best Pack for Making the Switch

The Black Tea Lover Pack (CAD $47.40) has 4 of our black teas, 125g in total. It's the most direct route from coffee to tea: bold enough to satisfy, varied enough to show you what single-origin black tea can taste like, and enough for several weeks of daily brewing.

If you're not sure you want to commit to black tea, the Tea Sampler Kit (CAD $30) gives you 10 teas across all four types, including the black teas above plus oolongs and green teas. It's a good way to work out which type suits your mornings and which your afternoons.
