Welcome, tea lover, to the enchanting world of Nepal Tea! Nestled high in the Himalayas, Nepal produces some of the world’s most aromatic, nuanced, and exquisite teas. Often whispered in the same breath as its famous neighbor, Darjeeling, Nepal tea possesses a unique character, a captivating story, and a flavor profile that is rapidly earning it global acclaim.

This comprehensive guide will be your companion on a journey through the terraced tea gardens of this Himalayan nation. We’ll explore what makes Nepal tea so special, delve into its distinct varieties, uncover its rich history, and guide you on how to brew the perfect cup. Not sure where to start? The Tea Sampler Kit ($30) covers four tea types from our Ilam and Taplejung farms — the best single introduction to what Nepal tea can be.

What Makes Nepal Tea So Special?

  • High Altitude: Most Nepali tea gardens are situated at 5,000–7,000 ft above sea level. This slow-growth environment allows leaves to develop higher concentrations of aromatic compounds, resulting in exceptionally complex and delicate flavors.

  • Orthodox Production: The vast majority of specialty Nepal tea is produced using orthodox methods — careful hand-plucking, gentle withering, rolling, oxidation, and firing. This dedication preserves the integrity of the tea leaf.

  • Emerging Terroir: Nepal’s tea industry has a history stretching back over a century but is a relatively newer player on the global specialty stage. Producers constantly innovate while honoring tradition, leading to teas that offer excellent quality and value.

Nepal’s Prominent Tea Regions

  • Ilam: Located in eastern Nepal, Ilam is synonymous with Nepal tea. Teas from Ilam are often characterized by delicate, floral notes, bright liquor, and a muscatel character.

  • Taplejung: Nepal’s highest tea-growing region, reaching up to 7,000 ft. Home of our Special Black Tea (Theba Black) from Pathibhara Tea Estate — rare outside Nepal.

Types of Nepal Tea

  • Nepal Black Tea (Orthodox): Complex flavor profiles featuring floral, fruity, muscatel grape, and sometimes spicy notes. Different harvest seasons (First, Second, Autumnal) yield varying characteristics.

  • Nepal Green Tea: Retains a fresh, vibrant character with notes that can be vegetal, slightly nutty, or subtly sweet.

  • Nepal White Tea: Made from the youngest buds, minimally processed. Exceptionally delicate, often with natural sweetness and subtle floral undertones.

  • Nepal Oolong Tea: Semi-oxidized teas bridging green and black, from light and floral to darker and honeyed.

How to Brew Nepal Tea

  • Black Tea: 90–95°C, 3–5 minutes.

  • Green Tea: 75–80°C, 1–3 minutes (can become bitter if over-steeped).

  • White Tea: 70–75°C, 2–4 minutes.

  • Oolong Tea: 85–95°C, 2–5 minutes.

Use 1 teaspoon (around 2–3g) of loose leaf tea per 8 oz (240ml) of water. Whole-leaf teas re-steep 2–3 times.
