Nepal Oolong Tea: Two High-Altitude Oolongs Worth Discovering

Last updated: June 2026

Nepal oolong tea is a partly oxidized loose-leaf tea grown at 5,000 to 7,000 ft in the Himalayan foothills of Ilam, and it's naturally free of bitterness. The altitude slows the leaf's growth, so it builds floral and stone-fruit notes instead of harsh tannins. We buy two distinct oolongs from two farms in Ilam, a light floral style and a deeper roasted one, and both are smooth without milk or sugar.

Most Canadian tea drinkers have never tried a Nepali oolong. Chinese and Taiwanese oolongs fill the specialty shelves, while Ilam's oolong is made quietly in small lots on single farms, with no blending. If you'd like to try both before buying a full bag, start with the Nepal Hills Tea Sampler Kit ($30).

Why does Nepal make such good oolong?

Nepal lies in the eastern Himalayan belt, and its best-known tea district, Ilam, sits at the same latitude and altitude as Darjeeling, just across the border. Still, Ilam's own small-scale terroir sets it apart.

At 5,000 to 7,000 ft, tea bushes grow slowly. Cold nights and warm days stress the plant just enough to concentrate its flavour compounds. What matters is what doesn't happen: lower down, fast-growing leaves turn more of their amino acids into bitter catechins, but at altitude that process slows and more L-theanine stays intact.

Oolong, partly oxidized and sitting between green and black, gains a lot from this. The enzyme-driven oxidation that creates oolong's complex aroma happens more slowly and evenly at altitude, so the cup is naturally sweet, with lifted floral notes, a long, smooth finish, and no bitterness or astringency to get past.

How do our two Nepal oolongs differ?

We work with two farms in Ilam, and each makes an oolong with its own character. Knowing the difference will help you choose, or convince you to try both.

Floral Oolong Tea: Norling Specialty Tea, Suryodaya, Ilam, 5,135 ft

Our Floral Oolong Tea comes from Norling Specialty Tea in Suryodaya, Ilam, at 5,135 ft. It's a lighter oolong, about 30 to 40% oxidized, with delicate notes of honey, orchid, and dried apricot. The leaf is lightly rolled and twisted, and the tea brews a clear golden amber that looks paler in the centre of the cup.

Norling is working toward organic certification. The farm sits at the edge of a protected forest in Ilam and uses no synthetic inputs. What sets this tea apart from commodity oolong is the artisan processing, with the oxidation timed by hand to keep the floral character.

If you like Taiwanese high mountain oolongs or lightly oxidized dancong, start with this one. It's delicate, cooling, and floral, a tea that rewards slowing down.

Dark Oolong Tea: Sandakphu Tea Estate, Jasbirey Village, Ilam, 5,500 to 7,000 ft

Our Dark Oolong Tea comes from Sandakphu Tea Estate in Jasbirey Village, Ilam, at 5,500 to 7,000 ft, which makes it one of the highest-grown teas we sell. It's more heavily oxidized, at 60 to 70%, with roasted stone fruit, dark chocolate, and earthy notes. It brews a deep amber, and the aroma gets stronger as the cup cools.

Sandakphu Tea Estate is a certified organic farm. It sits in the upper reaches of Ilam's tea belt, where the altitude adds to the roasted complexity that comes with heavier oxidation: stone fruit, a hint of dark berry, and a long, warm finish.

This is the oolong for people who love body and depth, a natural step between floral oolong and full black tea. It doesn't need milk or sugar, though it takes a splash of oat milk well if you like.

The science behind high-altitude oolong

The chemistry that makes Ilam's black teas smooth works in its oolongs too, and it matters even more in a partly oxidized tea, because full oxidation isn't there to cover up the terroir. A critical review of oolong tea in the scientific literature describes how the level of oxidation controls the balance of aromatic and polyphenol compounds in the cup.

L-theanine, the amino acid behind green tea's clean energy and the savoury depth of high mountain oolongs, builds up in slowly grown leaves. Lower down, faster growth and higher temperatures turn more theanine into catechins, which are astringent and bitter. At Ilam's heights that conversion is held back, so the tea keeps more theanine, which comes through as sweetness, a smooth texture, and no bitterness. The antioxidant activity of tea polyphenols is well documented, but in oolong it's their concentration that shapes how smooth the cup is.

In our Floral Oolong, the high theanine shows up as a creamy sweetness and a lifted floral character. In the Dark Oolong, it supports the roasted stone-fruit notes without any sharpness or dryness at the finish. Neither needs milk or sugar, which is a big change if you're used to bagged oolong that needs sweetening to be drinkable.

My father, Dev Dahal, has farmed tea in Ilam at 5,100 ft for decades. Seeing how altitude changes the leaf, with a slower curl, a deeper fragrance, and more concentrated character, is why I buy from Ilam's upper belt rather than from gardens down in the valleys.

How do you brew Nepal oolong tea?

Oolong rewards a little care. Our two oolongs are oxidized to different levels, so they brew best in different ways.

Floral Oolong Tea (lighter style):
Water at 85 to 90°C (185 to 195°F), 2 to 3 minutes for the first steep, 1 teaspoon (3g) per 250ml. It's lovely brewed gongfu-style: use a small pot and short steeps, and you'll get 4 to 5 cups from the same leaves, each a little different.

Dark Oolong Tea (roasted style):
Water at 90 to 95°C (195 to 205°F), 2.5 to 3.5 minutes for the first steep, 1 generous teaspoon (4g) per 250ml. The roasted notes deepen by the third steep, which many people find the best cup of the session.

A tip for Canadians: if your tap water is heavily chlorinated, filtered water will give you a noticeably cleaner cup. High-altitude oolong is sensitive to the minerals in water, and the florals in our Floral Oolong go flat in hard or heavily treated water. A simple filter is all you need.

Where can you buy Nepal oolong tea in Canada?

You won't often find Nepali oolong in Canadian shops; most specialty tea stores carry Chinese or Taiwanese oolongs. It reaches Canadian buyers almost entirely through direct-trade importers, companies that buy small lots from Ilam farms and ship them without blending. Nepal's tea industry is overseen by the National Tea and Coffee Development Board, which treats Ilam as a flagship high-altitude growing district.

Nepal Hills Tea is based in Peterborough, Ontario. Our Floral Oolong Tea and Dark Oolong Tea are available as loose leaf all year, and we ship across Canada, the USA, and select regions around the globe. To taste the range before buying a full bag, start with the Nepal Hills Tea Sampler Kit ($30).

Oolong is just one of the four types of tea Nepal makes. For an overview of how altitude shapes black, green, white, and oolong tea, read our Nepali tea guide, or explore the lightest type in our guide to loose-leaf white tea in Canada.

Frequently asked questions about Nepal oolong tea

Is Nepal oolong tea bitter?
No. Oolong grown at 5,000 to 7,000 ft in Ilam is naturally free of bitterness, because the altitude slows the leaf's growth and keeps more L-theanine instead of turning it into bitter catechins. Both our Floral Oolong and Dark Oolong are smooth and easy to drink without milk or sugar.

What is the difference between Floral Oolong and Dark Oolong from Nepal?
Floral Oolong Tea is lightly oxidized (30 to 40%), with honey, orchid, and dried apricot notes and a golden colour. Dark Oolong Tea is more heavily oxidized (60 to 70%), with roasted stone fruit, dark chocolate, and earthy notes and a deep amber cup. Both come from Ilam, but from different farms: Norling Specialty Tea at 5,135 ft and Sandakphu Tea Estate at 5,500 to 7,000 ft.

Where is Nepal oolong tea grown?
Ours comes from Ilam district in eastern Nepal. The Floral Oolong is from Norling Specialty Tea in Suryodaya, Ilam (5,135 ft), and the Dark Oolong is from Sandakphu Tea Estate in Jasbirey Village, Ilam (5,500 to 7,000 ft). Both farms are in Nepal's best high-altitude tea belt.

Is Nepal oolong tea organic?
Our Dark Oolong Tea from Sandakphu Tea Estate is grown on a certified organic farm. Our Floral Oolong Tea comes from Norling Specialty Tea, which is working toward organic certification. Neither farm uses synthetic inputs.

How do I brew Nepal oolong tea?
For Floral Oolong, use 85 to 90°C water and steep for 2 to 3 minutes. For Dark Oolong, use 90 to 95°C and steep for 2.5 to 3.5 minutes. Use 3 to 4g of loose leaf per 250ml. Both oolongs are worth steeping again, 3 to 5 times from the same leaves.

Can I buy Nepal oolong tea in Canada?
Yes. We ship Floral Oolong Tea and Dark Oolong Tea across Canada, the USA, and select regions around the globe from Peterborough, Ontario. Both are loose-leaf, direct-trade, and naturally free of bitterness. The Nepal Hills Tea Sampler Kit ($30) is a practical place to start if you want to taste the range before buying a full bag.

How does Nepal oolong compare to Darjeeling or Taiwanese oolong?
Nepal and Darjeeling share a similar altitude and latitude and make clean high-altitude teas. Oolong from Ilam leans toward a lighter floral lift and a smoother finish than Darjeeling's heavier muscatel style. Next to Taiwanese high mountain oolong, Ilam's Floral Oolong is just as delicate, with a more mineral, earthy edge. The Dark Oolong is roasted and deep, in a category of its own.
