Nepal Tea Collective: A Public Benefit Corporation Built on Traceability

Nepal Tea Collective was founded in 2016 by Nishchal Banskota, a second-generation tea producer whose father started one of Nepal's first certified organic tea gardens. The company became a Public Benefit Corporation in 2023, holds B Corp certification, and raised money from about 180 investors through a Wefunder crowdfunding round. Its main brand message is social impact: a stated goal of helping lift a million farmers out of poverty by 2050, a QR code on every product that traces it from farm to cup, and named programmes supporting women tea makers. Nepali Tea Traders: Boston-Area Awards and the Most Thorough FAQ in the Category

Nepali Tea Traders is a woman-owned company based in Saugus, Massachusetts, which has traded directly since 2012 and holds USDA Organic certification on some lines. Its Himalayan Golden Organic Black Tea won Gold at The Leafies international tea competition and Best Black Tea at the North American Tea Championship, and its Annapurna Amber Organic Oolong came 2nd in the Dark Oolong category at the same competition. Three of its teas, Spring White Buds, Himalayan Golden Organic Black Tea, and Sagarmatha Gold First Flush Black Tea, featured in a May 2019 New York Times piece on Nepal as a tea origin to watch. The brand says its teas grow at 4,000 to 7,500 ft in Ilam and uses the tagline "smoother than Darjeeling" across its site. Does Altitude Really Make Nepali Tea Less Bitter? What the Research Actually Says

Honestly, altitude does affect the compounds behind bitterness, but the effect varies by cultivar and isn't a universal rule. A 2020 field study hand-plucked first-flush leaf from five clones at four sites in Suryodaya, Ilam, at roughly 5,190 to 6,150 ft. For every clone, green tea had significantly more tannin, flavonoids, and phenolics than black tea made from the same leaf. That's a processing effect, not an altitude effect, and it shows why oxidation matters as much as elevation for how "sharp" a tea tastes (KC et al., 2020, Journal of Food Quality). How Do You Brew Nepali Tea So It Never Turns Bitter?

Bitterness in any tea usually comes from over-extraction, with water that's too hot or leaf steeped too long, not from the tea itself.
