Tea for Focus and Concentration: Why Green Tea May Outperform Coffee for Deep Work

par Bhaskar Dahal 12 May 2026 0 commentaire

In Canada, as almost everywhere, talk about productivity is dominated by coffee: espresso, cold brew, French press, more caffeine, faster. For many people, though, the mental peak from coffee lasts 60 to 90 minutes and is followed by anxiety, jitters, and a crash that makes long stretches of deep work harder.

Tea is a different option. It isn't weaker coffee. It works on the body in a different way.

I'm Bhaskar Dahal, founder of Nepal Hills Tea. I grew up drinking tea in Nepal and have bought directly from farms in Ilam and Taplejung for years. For steady, calm focus, the kind that makes deep work productive, high-altitude green tea has a physiological advantage over coffee.

The Science: Why Tea Gives Calmer Focus Than Coffee

Caffeine and L-Theanine Together

Tea contains two compounds that work together in a way coffee can't copy: caffeine and L-theanine.

Caffeine is a well-known stimulant. It blocks adenosine receptors (the chemical signal for drowsiness), increases dopamine and norepinephrine activity, and improves alertness, reaction time, and working memory. Coffee and tea both contain it, but tea has much less per cup: usually 20 to 40mg per 250ml, against 80 to 120mg for espresso.

L-theanine is an amino acid found almost only in tea. It increases alpha brain wave activity, the pattern linked to relaxed alertness and to meditation. It also modulates the response to caffeine, reducing caffeine-related anxiety and jitters without reducing alertness.

The research on this is specific and consistent:

  • A 2011 study in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that L-theanine with caffeine significantly improved accuracy on attention tasks compared with caffeine alone or a placebo.
  • A 2008 study in Biological Psychology found that L-theanine with caffeine reduced errors in sustained attention tasks and improved reaction time compared with a placebo.
  • Several studies have found that people report less anxiety with the combination than with caffeine alone, while staying just as alert.

In practice, green tea gives you the mental benefits of caffeine without the jitters and the crash. If you've noticed that coffee leaves you anxious or scattered after the first peak, this is why.

Why High-Altitude Nepali Green Tea

L-theanine levels in tea go up with altitude and with organic growing conditions. Tea plants at 5,000 to 7,000 ft, where our Ilam farm partner Farmers Tea Co. (certified organic) grows, build up more L-theanine because they grow slowly in the cool air.

The difference is more than marginal. Research on altitude and the amino acid content of tea consistently finds meaningfully higher levels in high-altitude teas. For focus, more L-theanine per cup means a stronger calm-focus effect and a gentler caffeine response.

The Best Nepali Teas for Focus

Floral Green Tea for Everyday Calm Focus

Our Floral Green Tea (from $10/25g) is the one to choose if you're replacing coffee with tea for focused work. It comes from Farmers Tea Co. in Ilam (certified organic, 5,500 ft), with moderate caffeine and high L-theanine. It tastes of jasmine-like florals with a light sweetness and no bitterness.

Brew it at 75 to 85°C for 2 to 3 minutes. You'll feel noticeably alert without coffee's agitation. Many people find they can focus for longer than with their coffee routine, and feel less urge to switch tasks.

Organic Light Green Tea for Long Work Sessions

Organic Light Green Tea ($20/50g), also from Farmers Tea Co. in Ilam (certified organic), has less caffeine than the Floral Green, so you can drink several cups a day without the caffeine piling up. For long sessions where you want a gentle, steady lift over 4 to 6 hours, reach for this one.

Gold Black Tea When You Need More Caffeine

When you really do need more caffeine, for an early meeting or a late push on a deadline, our Gold Black Tea ($20/50g) from Farmers Tea Co. in Ilam gives you more than green tea, with L-theanine still smoothing it out. It tastes of smooth malt, caramel, and honey. Black tea has more caffeine than green tea but still much less than espresso.

Floral Oolong for the Afternoon

For the mid-afternoon slump around 2 to 3 PM, when focus dips but another coffee would wreck your sleep, our Floral Oolong (from $10/25g) works well. It has moderate caffeine and moderate L-theanine and tastes light and floral. That's enough to bring back your alertness without keeping you up.

Tea vs Coffee Over a Work Day

Metric Espresso (single) Nepal Hills Green Tea
Caffeine per cup 80 to 120mg 20 to 40mg
L-theanine None About 25 to 50mg per cup (higher at altitude)
How long focus peaks 60 to 90 minutes 2 to 3 hours (steady)
Anxiety and jitters Common at high doses Rare (L-theanine moderates)
Crash after the peak Pronounced Mild or none
Effect on sleep Significant if after 2pm Minimal; white tea is fine until evening

A Tea-Based Work Day

This is how I spread my own tea through the day for focus and energy:

My total caffeine for the day is a fraction of a four-espresso habit, my focus is steadier, and I'm calm in the evening instead of wired.

How to Brew Green Tea for Focus

A few brewing notes for this purpose:

  • Don't use boiling water. Water at 75 to 85°C keeps more L-theanine and pulls out fewer tannins.
  • Brew for 2 to 3 minutes. A shorter steep gives less caffeine and a longer one more, so adjust to suit you.
  • Re-steep. The second steep has less caffeine but keeps the L-theanine, so it's calmer, which helps if you want to taper off caffeine as the day goes on.
  • Use filtered water in hard-water Canadian cities like Toronto and Calgary. It tastes better, and some research suggests mineral content affects how much L-theanine is extracted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is green tea better than coffee for focus?

For long stretches of deep work, the research favours green tea's mix of L-theanine and caffeine over coffee's caffeine alone. Studies show the combination improves attention accuracy and reduces errors more than caffeine alone, with much less anxiety and jitteriness. The focus also lasts longer (2 to 3 hours against 60 to 90 minutes) and the crash afterwards is milder. Coffee is still quicker for a burst of high-caffeine alertness, but for sustained mental work green tea has a real advantage.

What is L-theanine and why does it help focus?

L-theanine is an amino acid found almost only in tea. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and increases alpha brain wave activity (relaxed alertness). With caffeine, it reduces the jitters while keeping the alertness. In clinical studies, the combination consistently does better on attention and working memory tasks than either compound alone. High-altitude teas, like our Ilam green teas grown at 5,000 to 7,000 ft, have higher L-theanine levels.

How much green tea should I drink for focus?

Most research uses 1 to 2 cups per focus session. A cup of our green tea at a standard strength gives 20 to 40mg of caffeine and roughly 25 to 50mg of L-theanine, which is about the range used in studies on mental performance. Drink it 15 to 20 minutes before you need to focus.

Which Nepal Hills tea is best for studying or deep work?

Floral Green Tea (from $10/25g) is the best all-round focus tea: moderate caffeine, high L-theanine, and pleasant to drink cup after cup. For longer sessions with less caffeine, choose Organic Light Green Tea. In the afternoon, Floral Oolong helps you focus without affecting your sleep. All come from Ilam at 5,000 to 7,000 ft, and none are bitter.

Does Nepali tea have more L-theanine than other green teas?

Research on tea chemistry consistently links high altitude with more L-theanine. At 5,000 to 7,000 ft in Ilam, slow growth in cool conditions concentrates amino acids, L-theanine among them. Certified organic growing, as at Farmers Tea Co., is also linked to higher production of secondary metabolites. The exact difference varies by harvest and cultivar, but the link with altitude is well established.
