Nepal Hills Floral Oolong Tea: A High-Mountain Himalayan Oolong

par Bhaskar Dahal 13 May 2026 0 commentaire

Oolong is the most complex type of tea. It's partially oxidized, sitting between green and black, and its flavour changes a great deal with altitude, cultivar, and processing. Our Floral Oolong Tea is at the lighter, more aromatic end of that range: a high-altitude Himalayan oolong with jasmine and honey notes, natural sweetness, and none of the astringency that spoils poorer oolongs. If you love high-mountain Taiwanese oolong, it's well worth trying.

What Is Floral Oolong Tea?

Oolong is partially oxidized, somewhere between green tea (barely oxidized) and black tea (fully oxidized). Where it falls in that range, usually 15 to 85% oxidation, shapes its character. Lightly oxidized oolongs are floral, sweet, and close to green tea. Heavily oxidized ones are rich and roasted, complex in a quite different way.

Our Floral Oolong is lightly oxidized. Grown at high altitude in Nepal's Ilam district, it develops the same natural floral aroma compounds (linalool and related terpenes) that made high-mountain Taiwanese oolongs like Ali Shan and Li Shan famous. The altitude is similar and the terroir is Himalayan, and anyone who has tasted good high-mountain oolong will recognise the character straight away.

Flavour Profile

Jasmine and honey on the nose, with a light, naturally sweet body and a clean floral finish. The cup is bright, with no astringency and very little bitterness, and it turns creamy over later steeps. It's very easy to drink on its own, and we don't recommend adding anything.

Next to our Dark Oolong, the Floral Oolong is lighter, more aromatic, and more obviously floral, while the Dark Oolong has more roasted depth and body. Both are excellent, so the choice comes down to whether you prefer aromatic lightness or roasted depth.

Who Is Floral Oolong Tea For?

  • People who drink high-mountain Taiwanese oolong. It's the closest comparison: a similar high-altitude character, with Himalayan terroir.
  • People new to oolong. Its light, approachable character makes it an easy way in.
  • Green tea drinkers who want more complexity. It's a step from green tea toward the richer dark oolongs and black teas.
  • Afternoon tea drinkers. It has moderate caffeine (30 to 50mg) and calming L-theanine, so it's aromatic and pleasant without being stimulating.

How to Brew Floral Oolong Tea

Water temperature: 85 to 90°C. Light oolongs are more sensitive to heat than dark ones, and boiling water can flatten the floral aromas and add bitterness. Use water just off the boil.

How much leaf: 1 teaspoon (2 to 3g) per 250ml for Western-style brewing. For gongfu style (a small teapot or gaiwan), use more leaf, 5 to 6g per 100ml, and steep for 30 to 45 seconds per infusion.

Steeping time: 2 to 3 minutes for Western style. Taste it at 2 minutes, because the floral notes come through early and don't need a long steep.

Drink it straight: No milk and no sugar. The floral and honey notes are the reason to drink it, and milk masks both completely.

Re-steeping: Floral Oolong re-steeps very well, giving 4 to 6 infusions that change but stay pleasant. Later steeps often turn creamier and sweeter. It's one of our best teas for gongfu-style brewing.

Floral Oolong vs. High-Mountain Taiwanese Oolong

The comparison is a natural one. Both are grown at altitude in cool conditions that produce floral aroma compounds, and both have jasmine and honey notes with a clean finish. The main differences:

  • Terroir: Taiwanese high-mountain oolongs grow in volcanic soil, while our Floral Oolong grows in Himalayan soil shaped by glaciers, so the mineral character is slightly different.
  • Cultivar: Taiwan mostly uses Qingxin and related cultivars bred for oolong. Nepal uses Camellia sinensis var. sinensis cultivars it shares with Darjeeling, which give a slightly different but equally good floral character.
  • Price: High-mountain Taiwanese oolongs sell at a significant premium. Our Floral Oolong gives you a similar high-altitude character for less.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Floral Oolong Tea good for beginners?

Yes. Its light, aromatic, naturally sweet character makes it one of the most approachable teas we sell. There's no bitterness or harshness, and the flavour is interesting enough to keep your attention without needing any tea expertise to enjoy it.

How does it compare to green tea?

It's more complex and aromatic than green tea, with slightly more body. Partial oxidation creates flavour compounds that green tea doesn't have. For someone who wants more complexity without going all the way to black tea, Floral Oolong is the natural next step.

Can I use Floral Oolong for gongfu brewing?

Yes, it suits gongfu style well. Use a small gaiwan or clay teapot with 5 to 6g per 100ml, and steep for 30 to 45 seconds per infusion. Over the infusions the tea moves from floral to sweet to creamy.

How much caffeine is in oolong tea?

About 30 to 50mg per cup, between green tea (20 to 40mg) and black tea (40 to 70mg). The L-theanine smooths out the caffeine, so you feel focused and alert more than stimulated.

Does Nepal Hills ship Floral Oolong to Canada?

Yes, Canada-wide from Peterborough, Ontario. Shipping is free on orders over $60 CAD, and most provinces get their orders within 3 to 7 business days.

The Bottom Line

Floral Oolong Tea is our aromatic high-mountain oolong, with Himalayan terroir, a floral character that comes from altitude, and the kind of complexity that rewards attention and repeat infusions. Whether you love Taiwanese high-mountain oolong or you've been curious about oolong and want an easy place to start, it's a good choice.
