Gold Black vs Muscatel Black: Which Nepal Hills Black Tea Should You Buy?
Last updated: October 2026
Buy Gold Black Tea if you want an everyday black tea: smooth malt, light caramel and honey, good with or without milk, and an easy step away from coffee. Buy Muscatel Black Tea if you drink tea plain and want more aroma: honey-grape, dried apricot and a light rose finish. Both are grown in Ilam, Nepal, and neither is bitter.
If you would rather taste both before choosing, the Tea Sampler Kit ($30 CAD) holds 5g of each, alongside the other eight teas we bring in from our four farm partners in Ilam and Taplejung. Each 5g pouch brews two to three cups, which is enough to try a tea twice and know where you stand.
Gold Black or Muscatel Black: which should you buy first?
Start with Gold Black Tea if black tea is something you drink in the morning, every morning, and you want it to behave. It is round and malty, with a clean finish. It takes milk well, it works over ice, and it is the tea we recommend to coffee drinkers making the switch. On our site it is listed under the name Nepal Hills Organic Black Tea; the tea inside is Gold Black.
Start with Muscatel Black Tea if you already enjoy tea without milk and you like to notice what is in the cup. It is lighter on the tongue and much more aromatic. If you know Darjeeling second flush, the muscatel note will be familiar: it comes from the same natural process.
If you still cannot decide, ask yourself one thing: do you add milk? If yes, Gold Black. If no, Muscatel is where the extra money and attention pay off.
Where is each tea grown, and who grows it?
Both teas come from the Ilam district in eastern Nepal, but from two different farms.
Gold Black Tea is grown at 5,500 ft in Malate, Ilam, by Farmers Tea Co., a certified organic farm. Dil Kumar Rai leads it alongside 150 farming families and youth artisans, and every batch is processed by hand. The golden tips you see in the dry leaf are young leaves picked during the spring flush.
Muscatel Black Tea is grown at 5,000–5,500 ft by Norling Specialty Tea, a young farm run by youth artisans and 40 smallholder families. Norling Specialty Tea is in the process of organic certification, so we do not call this tea certified organic. It is made in small seasonal batches, hand-processed from leaf to bag.
For both farms, 5% of what you spend goes back through our farm program to help them keep or reach organic certification.
What do Gold Black and Muscatel Black taste like?
Gold Black Tea tastes of gentle malt, light caramel and honey, with a clean, golden finish. It is the kind of tea that does not ask much of you. You can drink a whole pot without it turning heavy.
Muscatel Black Tea tastes of honey and grape first, then dried apricot, then a light rose note as the cup cools. The texture is silky, and the sweetness is entirely natural.
That muscatel character is not added. A small leafhopper called the green jassid feeds on young leaves during the late spring flush, and the tea plant answers by producing the aromatic compounds behind the honey-grape-apricot depth. It either happens on the bush or it does not. You can read more about it in What Is Muscatel Tea?

How do you brew Gold Black and Muscatel Black?
The two teas brew the same way, which makes a side-by-side tasting easy. Heat the water to 90–95°C, just off the boil. Use 2–3g of leaf, about one teaspoon, for a 240 ml cup. Steep for 3–4 minutes, then take the leaves out.
Gold Black Tea will re-steep two or three times. Drink it as it is, add milk, or pour it over ice.
With Muscatel Black Tea, skip the milk and sugar the first time. The aroma is the reason to buy it, and milk covers most of it. If a cup tastes flat, try the longer end of the steep time before adding more leaf.
Whichever you brew, take the leaves out when the time is up rather than leaving them in the cup. Our product pages list both teas at roughly 40–70 mg of caffeine per 8 oz cup.
How much do they cost, and which size makes sense?
Gold Black Tea is $20 CAD for 50g or $45 CAD for 180g. Muscatel Black Tea is $10 CAD for 25g or $44 CAD for 180g.
If you drink black tea daily, the 180g bag of Gold Black is the practical choice. For Muscatel, the 25g bag is a sensible first buy: enough to brew it properly several times before deciding if it becomes your regular cup.
If you want both, plus our two other black teas, the Black Tea Lover Pack ($47.40 CAD) holds 50g of Gold Black and 25g each of Muscatel Black, Ruby Black and Theba Black (Special Black Tea) from Pathibhara Tea Estate in Taplejung. Our guide to what's inside the Black Tea Lover Pack walks through all four.
We ship from Peterborough, Ontario, across Canada, to the USA and to some other regions. Orders are processed in 1–2 days and tracked by Canada Post or DHL. Shipping is free in Canada on orders over $60 and to the US on orders over $80.
Which one makes the better gift?
For someone who already drinks black tea with milk, Gold Black Tea in the 180g bag is a gift they will use every day. For someone who enjoys Darjeeling or likes to taste tea slowly, Muscatel Black Tea is the more interesting present. If you do not know their habits, the Tea Sampler Kit or the Black Tea Lover Pack lets them find out for themselves.
Frequently asked questions
Is Muscatel Black Tea like Darjeeling?
It shares the muscatel character that Darjeeling second flush teas are known for, produced the same way, by the green jassid feeding on young leaves. Ilam borders Darjeeling and grows tea at similar elevations. Ours comes from one farm, Norling Specialty Tea, with full traceability.
Which is better with milk, Gold Black or Muscatel Black?
Gold Black Tea. Its malt and caramel notes hold up well with milk. Muscatel Black Tea is best plain, because milk hides the honey-grape and rose aroma that makes it worth buying.
How much caffeine is in Gold Black and Muscatel Black?
Our product pages list both at approximately 40–70 mg of caffeine per 8 oz cup. Caffeine in tea varies with how much leaf you use and how long you steep it.
Is Gold Black Tea organic?
Gold Black Tea is grown on a certified organic farm, Farmers Tea Co. in Malate, Ilam. Muscatel Black Tea comes from Norling Specialty Tea, which is in the process of organic certification and is not yet certified.
Do you ship Gold Black and Muscatel Black to the US?
Yes. We ship from Peterborough, Ontario, to the United States with tracking, and shipping is free on US orders over $80. Canadian orders ship free over $60.
