Nepal Hills Floral White Tea: A Delicate Himalayan White Tea

by Bhaskar Dahal 13 May 2026 0 comments

White tea is the least processed tea there is: very little handling, natural drying, and nothing added. Our Floral White Tea adds altitude to that simplicity. Grown in Nepal's Himalayan foothills, its young buds develop a floral, honey-like sweetness that low-grown white teas can't match, and the cup tastes very much of the place it comes from.

What Is Floral White Tea?

Floral White Tea is made from the youngest buds and first leaves of the tea plant, picked in early spring and left to wither and dry with minimal processing. Green tea is heat-treated to stop oxidation and black tea is fully oxidized, and white tea sits between them: some natural oxidation happens while the leaves wilt, but the leaf structure stays largely intact. The tea is pale and delicate, with subtle complexity and very little caffeine.

The floral character comes from the altitude. At 5,000 to 6,000ft in Nepal's Ilam district, the buds grow slowly in cool air and build up aroma compounds, especially linalool and other terpene alcohols. These give the natural jasmine and honey notes that set high-altitude white tea apart from commodity white tea.

Flavour Profile

Delicate and naturally sweet, with jasmine and honey on the nose and a clean, light finish. The cup is a pale yellow-white, almost clear. The flavour is soft and rewards slow, attentive drinking, opening up gradually as you go.

It's very low in caffeine and high in L-theanine, so it feels the way it tastes: calm, gentle, and unhurried.

Who Is Floral White Tea For?

  • Afternoon and evening tea drinkers. Its very low caffeine means you can drink it at any time of day without it affecting your sleep.
  • People cutting back on caffeine. The flavour is complex enough to hold your interest, and the caffeine is low enough not to matter.
  • Gift buyers. White tea feels luxurious, and Floral White Tea has a striking aroma as soon as you open it.
  • Meditation and mindfulness. Its delicate, calming character suits slow, quiet rituals.
  • Tea ceremony enthusiasts. The restraint and subtlety of good white tea makes a contrast with the intensity of other types.

How to Brew Floral White Tea

Water temperature: 75 to 85°C. White tea is the most heat-sensitive tea we sell. Boiling water damages the delicate buds and gives a flat, sometimes astringent cup, so use water well off the boil.

How much leaf: 1.5 to 2 teaspoons (2 to 3g) per 250ml. White tea is less dense than black tea, so you need more by volume for the same weight.

Steeping time: 2 to 2.5 minutes for the first steep. Taste at 2 minutes, because the floral notes come through early and don't need a long steep.

No milk or sugar: The natural sweetness is the reason to drink white tea, and anything you add masks the delicate character that altitude gives it.

Re-steeping: Floral White Tea re-steeps very well, giving 3 to 4 infusions that get slightly sweeter and more honeyed each time. The fourth steep is often people's favourite.

Floral White Tea vs. Fresh Nepali White Tea

We carry two white teas:

  • Floral White Tea is more aromatic, with jasmine and honey up front. It's the more complex and perfumed of the two.
  • Fresh Nepali White Tea is cleaner, lighter, and simply fresh, a more restrained take on Himalayan white tea.

Both are excellent. Floral White Tea is the better place for most people to start, because its character is easy to pick out. Fresh Nepali White Tea suits people who already enjoy white tea's restraint.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes white tea different from green or black tea?

Processing. White tea uses only the youngest buds and first leaves, which are simply wilted and dried with almost no other handling. Green tea is heat-treated to prevent oxidation, and black tea is fully oxidized. White tea sits between them, with some natural oxidation and most of the leaf's original character kept.

Is Floral White Tea high in antioxidants?

Yes. Because it's so lightly processed, white tea keeps high levels of catechins and other antioxidants naturally present in fresh tea leaves. Growing at altitude in Nepal's Ilam district concentrates these compounds further.

Is white tea caffeine-free?

No, but it's the lowest-caffeine tea we sell, at about 15 to 30mg per cup compared with 40 to 70mg for black tea. Most people can drink it in the evening without it affecting their sleep.

Can I cold-brew Floral White Tea?

Yes, and white tea is especially good cold-brewed. Add 2 teaspoons to 500ml of cold filtered water and leave it in the fridge for 8 to 12 hours. You'll get a naturally sweet, lightly floral cold brew that needs no sweetener.

Does Nepal Hills Tea ship white tea to Canada?

Yes, Canada-wide from Peterborough, Ontario. Shipping is free on orders over $60 CAD.

The Bottom Line

Floral White Tea is the quietest, most contemplative cup we sell, and the one that most rewards paying attention. It's minimally processed, shaped by altitude, and naturally floral and sweet, a good choice when you want your tea to be a moment to yourself.
